Guide to Skyros Airport

Skyros Airport (SKU) is on the flat north of the island, 11 km from Chora, the capital under its Venetian castle, and shares its long runway with a Hellenic Air Force base. The civil terminal is small. Sky Express and Olympic fly from Athens and Thessaloniki a few times a week all year, and there are no international flights; the airfield’s military role means no photography on the apron.

Skyros is the southernmost of the Sporades and the least visited, known for its carnival, its small wild ponies and the pine forests of the north. Most visitors arrive by the ferry from Kymi on Evia; the flight is the shortcut, and with a few dozen seats it fills fast.

Transport

Chora is 11 km south, about 20 minutes and €25 by taxi; Molos and Magazia beach about €22, Linaria port about €30. There is no airport bus; book a taxi or a hire car for your flight.

Local tips

  • Book your transport with your flight. The taxis are few, there is no airport bus, and the island bus follows the ferry, not the aircraft.
  • The civil terminal shares a military airfield: no photographs of the runway or aircraft, and keep to the signed road.
  • Seats sell out for the carnival in February and March and for August; book early, or plan the ferry from Kymi, which is two and a half hours from Athens by road.
